2013: Hummingbird Update

In 2013, Google rolled out the hummingbird update. Instead of just matching vocabulary in the query to vocabulary in the search results, the hummingbird algorithm works to understand the meaning of the query and match it with relevant results.

2015: Mobilegeddon Update

As more and more people had started to use Google on their mobile device, Google used this mobilegeddon update to boost any websites that is mobile-friendly optimized. At this time, Google found that 50 percent of their search queries came from mobile phones.

2016: Possum Update

In 2016, Google rolled out possum update which affected the local ranking filter. After the update, Google rank pages based on the physical location of the user. Therefore, local businesses are gaining benefits from this update.

2018: Mobile-First Index Update

In 2018, Google enhanced the Mobilegeddon to mobile-first index. Googlebot will first go to the mobile version, and secondly go to the desktop version. If having a mobile friendly site just works as a booster previously, now it is a must-have after the update.

2018: Medic or Query Intent Update

In the same year as mobile-first index update, Google emphasized that the search queries related to health, financial, legal information and news information must be answered by each authorized expertise or organization. At the same time, Google also improved their search intent result based on the keywords.

2019: BERT Update

In 2019, Google released a natural language programming model called BERT. BERT stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. With BERT algorithm, Google now had improved in understanding and interpreting texts and sentences queries.
