In this week’s Q&A section, we have selected the following topic from our subscriber: “How often should you update website for SEO?

Question From The Foxy SEO:

“I’ve been following your content on SEO school and it says that we must always update our website for a better SEO. So, how often should I update content on my website for SEO good practice?

One of the key factors that can affect a website’s SEO is how frequently it is updated. But, how often should a website be updated for SEO?

The answer to this question is not straightforward, as the ideal frequency of website updates will depend on a number of factors, such as the type of website, the industry it operates in, and the goals of the website. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine the ideal update frequency for your website.

1. Content Updates

Content is one of the most important factors that search engines consider when ranking websites. Therefore, it is crucial to regularly update the content on your website, whether it’s blog posts, product descriptions, or service pages. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least one new piece of content per week, although this may vary depending on the industry and the size of your website.

2. Technical Updates

Technical updates refer to changes to the underlying structure of your website, such as changes to the website’s code, design, or layout. These updates can help to improve the user experience and can also help to boost the website’s SEO. Technical updates should be carried out on a regular basis, ideally every few months, or as needed.

3. News and Events Updates

If your website covers news and events, it’s essential to keep the website updated with the latest news and events related to your industry. This helps to keep the website relevant and can also help to attract backlinks from other websites.

4. Seasonal Updates

Some websites may need to be updated more frequently depending on the season, for example, an e-commerce website for Christmas, or a website for a summer camp. This helps to keep the website relevant to the current season and also attract more visitors.

5. Competitor Analysis

Keeping an eye on your competitors can also help you to determine the ideal update frequency for your website. Analyze how often your competitors are updating their websites, and consider whether you need to update your website more frequently to stay competitive.

In conclusion, the ideal update frequency for a website will depend on a number of factors, including the type of website, the industry it operates in, and the goals of the website. However, as a general rule, it is recommended to aim for at least one new piece of content per week, carry out technical updates every few months, keep the website updated with the latest news and events, update the website based on the season, and conduct a competitor analysis. By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your website stays relevant and continues to rank well in search engine results pages.

It is Possible For a Website to Still Earn Organic Visitors Without Any Updates?

Yes it is! But it would likely depend on several factors such as the niche or industry the website is in, the quality and relevance of the content, and the strength of the website’s backlink profile.

For example, a website that has high-quality, evergreen content that is relevant to its target audience and has a strong backlink profile may continue to earn organic visitors without any updates. However, a website with low-quality content and few backlinks would likely not be able to sustain organic traffic without regular updates and optimization.

On one of my websites, I was able to maintain a consistent organic traffic without a single update for a 6 month period. Afterwards, it started to drop the moment my competitor’s gain the number 1 position by earning stronger backlink profile.

It’s worth noting that even if a website is able to earn organic traffic without updates, it would still be beneficial to make updates and optimizations in order to maintain or increase traffic in the long-term.

Does Website That Publish More Post Everyday Will Rank Better on Google?

Frequency of posting on a website is one of many factors that can affect its ranking on Google. However, it is not the only factor, and simply publishing more posts every day will not necessarily lead to a higher ranking. Google uses a complex algorithm to determine the ranking of websites, taking into account factors such as the relevance and quality of the content, the number and quality of inbound links, and the overall user experience.

It’s important to focus on creating high-quality, relevant content that provides value to your users, and to promote your website through effective SEO techniques. However, if we’re comparing two different websites with the same SEO metrics, the answer is yes, the website that publish more frequent will rank better on Google.
